The Lee lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for an Assistant Specialist. Our group studies how the widespread genetic parasites, transposable elements, influence genome function and evolution through epigenetic mechanisms. Toward this end, we combine functional genomics, computational biology, experimental genetics, and evolutionary biology.

Requirements for the position include:
- a B.S. in Biology or related degree
- at least one year independent experience with standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, qPCR) in a research laboratory setting
- experience and demonstrated ability to execute complex protocols (e.g., Next-generation sequencing library preparation)
- attentive to details and strong organizing skills
- strong communication skills
- can work independently as well as collaboratively
- be comfortable working with fruit flies Preferences will be given to candidates with experience with functional genomics or Drosophila genetics.
Responsibilities of the position include
- execute and optimize molecular biology experiments for genomics studies
- maintain Drosophila culture and make genetic crosses
- maintain laboratory equipment and inventory (including ordering supplies)
- assist projects of other members of the lab when necessary
The initial appointment is for one year with potential extension and/or renewal based on work performance and availability of funding support.

Postdoctoral scholar in the Evolutionary Epigenomics Lab – Dr. Grace Lee
The Lee lab at the University of California, Irvine is seeking an independent and motivated postdoctoral fellow to study how transposable elements shape genome function and evolution through epigenetic mechanisms. Toward this end, we combine population genomics, functional genomics, computational biology, and cell biology. The postdoctoral fellow will focus on the impacts of transposable elements on 3D genome organization, and how the associated functional consequences contribute to genome evolution. Candidates will ideally have interests relevant to these topics, and will have opportunities to pursue their own research interests in evolutionary genetics/epigenetics.
The lab is committed to individual mentoring and will provide opportunities for career and skill development. We will also provide resources for attending scientific seminars and conferences. The successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in the following or related fields: evolutionary genetics, genetics, genomics, epigenetics, cell biology, bioinformatics or computational biology. We are currently looking for candidates who (1) have extensive experience with -omics data and strong quantitative skills or (2) have extensive experience with epigenomics/cell biology. Good organizational and writing skills are also required. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who have recently completed, or will soon complete, their Ph.D.
The position is NIH-funded and has full benefits. Salary will depend on candidate experience. The start date is flexible and can be as early as Sep 2021.
