The Dunlop School is delighted to announce that Distinguished Professor Brandon Gaut has been honored with the inaugural Genetics Society of America (GSA) Mentorship Award, recognizing his deep commitment to guiding and uplifting the next generation of scientists. His approach to mentorship is shaped by the belief that small acts of support — both professional and personal — can make a lasting impact on someone’s career and well-being.

Throughout his career, Professor Gaut has fostered an environment where creativity, flexibility and scientific excellence thrive, while also recognizing the importance of work-life balance. He has supported his trainees not only in their research but also through pivotal moments in their lives, ensuring they have the resources and encouragement to succeed. His dedication has helped launch the careers of more than 20 researchers who now hold leadership positions in academia, with many others excelling in industry. His former trainees have earned prestigious honors, from Royal Society Fellowships to Presidential Early Career Awards, but what makes him most proud is their commitment to service. Many have gone on to lead as department chairs, academic society presidents, journal editors and government science advisors — continuing a legacy of mentorship that extends far beyond his own lab.

Receiving this award is a testament to Professor Gaut’s lasting influence, not just in the field of genetics, but in the lives of those he has mentored. His dedication to fostering both scientific excellence and a culture of support has left an enduring mark, and we celebrate this well-deserved recognition.
