Ecological Society of America Recognizes School of Biological Sciences Professors

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Professors Cascade J. B. Sorte, Jennifer B. H. Martiny and Travis E. Huxman have been named fellows of the Ecological Society of America (ESA), the world’s largest community of professional ecologists.  ESA fellows are selected based on their outstanding contributions to the advancement of the ESA’s mission, which includes raising the public’s level of awareness on ecological matters and increasing the resources available for ecologist.

Established in 2012, the ESA created the fellow program to honors members at multiple levels of their career.  Professor Travis Huxman, also the Director of The Center for Environmental Biology, was elected for advancing our understanding of plant ecophysiology, with fundamental work on the ecology and evolution of functional traits in plants, effects of climate change on ecosystems, and factors influencing restoration and conservation.  Professor Jennifer Martiny was elected for advancing our understanding of the community ecology of microorganisms by bridging the fields of ecology and microbiology and developing the new field of microbial biogeography.

Martiny were elected as fellows and Professor Sorte as an early career fellow.  The ESA descriptions inductees are written below.

Travis E. Huxman, Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology;, University of California, Irvine

Cascade J. B. Sorte, Assistant Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Irvine

Elected for advancing the understanding of mechanisms underlying community composition and biogeographic patterns in response to global change, especially invasion and climate change, in marine systems.

Jennifer B. H. Martiny, Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Irvine
