Exercise is Medicine: Exploring Exercise in the Treatment and Prevention of Chronic Disease, is a lecture part of the Mind, Body, World & You lecture series.

This presentation will examine how regular physical activity enhances cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental health while significantly improving outcomes for chronic conditions such as Type II diabetes, various cancers, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. By integrating exercise into daily life, individuals can reduce disease risk, improve quality of life, and promote long-term well-being.

About the Speaker:

James W. Hicks, PhD
As a broadly trained integrative physiologist, Jim is internationally recognized for his research on the comparative and evolutionary physiology of the vertebrate cardiopulmonary system. He has authored more than 120 articles covering topics from the evolution of the vertebrate heart to physiological responses in microgravity, with his work often featured in the media. In addition to his scientific research, Jim has consulted for the TV and film industry, notably serving as the life-science consultant for Disney/Pixar on the Academy Award-winning film “Wall-E.” He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the California Academy of Sciences, and the American Physiological Society, and he received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Aarhus in Denmark for his contributions to the field of physiology.
