About Funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, the T32 Interdisciplinary Training Program in Hearing Research trains new scientists in hearing research. PhD students and postdoctoral scholars at UCI take advantage of interdisciplinary faculty participation across five Schools. Research area interests span both many levels (genes, molecules, cells, systems and behavior) and experimental approaches (cell and molecular biology, neurophysiology, psychoacoustics, computation, human imaging, human learning, medical device engineering). Trainees prepare for future careers as independent researchers by taking a course in Auditory Neuroscience and participate in a seminar series, a journal club, and annual conferences. Trainees are also required to take a course on grant writing and prepare an NRSA proposal.

Eligibility and Application Process For both Pre- and Post-doctoral applications, deadlines are June 1 for a July 1 start date. Contact Prof. Metherate with any questions (raju.metherate@uci.edu). For list of faculty and research interests, go to http://chr.ss.uci.edu/. PhD Students This training program is open to PhD students at the end of their first year and beyond. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. All trainees are required to pursue research training full time. Appointments are for one year with the possibility of an additional year renewal. Evaluation will be based on academic record, applicant’s statement and letter of support from research advisor. Letters should address the applicant’s potential and motivation for a career in hearing research.
The application consists of the following and must be submitted via email to Dr. Raju Metherate (raju.metherate@uci.edu):
- Cover letter with statement detailing interest in and commitment to a career in hearing research
- CV
- Graduate and undergraduate transcripts and GRE scores (unofficial copies), and reference letter(s)
Postdoctoral Scholars (including medical residents)
This training program is open to postdoctoral scholars. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. All trainees are required to pursue research training full time. Appointments are for one year with the possibility of an additional year renewal. Evaluation will be based on evidence of outstanding scholarship and potential, and a letter of support from research advisor (and optionally, if applicant is new to UCI, letter from previous advisor).
The application consists of the following and must be submitted via email to Dr. Raju Metherate (raju.metherate@uci.edu):
- Cover letter with statement detailing interest in and commitment to a career in hearing research
- CV
- Reference letter(s)
Positions are available to medical residents for a one-year (renewable) research experience in a basic science lab. Evaluation will be the same as for other postdoctoral applicants.
