In recognition of Independence Day, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., shared an amazing video of the brain taken by Neurobiology and Behavior Associate Professor Sunil Gandhi and graduate researcher Ricardo Azevedo. The video was recently uploaded to the NIH Director’s Blog website and highlighted some of Professor Gandhi’s NIH-supported work. The Dunlop School team made the video using their Translucence Biosystems’ Mesoscale Imaging System. The system allows researchers to take whole-brain snapshots of neuronal activity and trace neural circuits across brain regions.
In addition to its presence on the NIH Director’s Blog, the Gandhi and Azevedo video was also the first-place winner of the NIH-supported BRAIN Initiative’s 2020 “Show Us Your BRAINS!” imaging contest. The technology behind the video is being leveraged by Professor Gandhi and Mr. Azevedo’s company, Translucence Biosystems, which has also received Small Business Innovation Research grants from the NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health. Professor Gandhi, Mr. Azevedo and Translucence Biosystems were recently featured in the UCI Beall Applied Innovation Rising Tide magazine.
