UCI Reaches out to Community Partners to Help Save the Salton Sea

Salton Sea sunsetUnder the direction of Professor Timothy Bradley, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, the Salton Sea Initiative seeks to harness UCI’s research, teaching, and service resources to address challenges facing the Salton Sea region. In January, Professor Bradley and Dean LaFerla traveled to Palm Springs to speak with the local Rotary club. The Palm Springs Rotary members seek to develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, including environmental challenges. With the help of the Rotary club, Professor Bradley hopes to increase the awareness of the changes occurring at the Salton Sea.

The Salton Sea is located south of Riverside county and is the largest lake in California.  As the Sea continues to shrink, wind blowing across its dried shoreline could create dust clouds that may threaten the health of hundreds of thousands of Californians.
